AI quantity takeoff: what it is and how it works

AI quantity takeoff is software-assisted interpretation of construction drawings to create an initial schedule of identified or measured quantities.

In brief: provide drawings, review the generated quantities against the source, and resolve uncertain or incomplete items before relying on them. An AI takeoff is a starting point, not a certified result.

Who may find it useful?

Builders, quantity surveyors, trades, project managers and owners can use an initial takeoff to organise quantities, inform early planning, or compare a set of figures with the drawings. The value depends on the task and the quality and completeness of the information provided.

What goes in, and what comes out?

The input is a project drawing set, such as architectural or structural plans and related details. Metrasure analyses the supplied files and generates quantity information in a takeoff or bill-of-quantities style output. Depending on the project and the documents, the output may include measured items and items interpreted from drawing notes or context.

Generated quantities do not replace the drawings. Keep the source set available so that each result can be checked against its location, note, dimension and revision.

A typical workflow

  1. Gather the relevant, current project drawings and confirm the set is internally consistent.
  2. Upload the drawings to a project for analysis.
  3. Review the generated takeoff, checking quantities and assumptions against the source documents.
  4. Clarify or correct items where the project information supports it, then use the reviewed output for its intended purpose.

Limitations to keep in view

Automated interpretation can miss a detail, read a symbol incorrectly, or make an assumption when a drawing is ambiguous. Incomplete, low-resolution, scanned or conflicting files can make analysis less reliable or prevent useful results. A generated schedule may not capture every project condition, specification or scope decision.

Review matters. No takeoff should be treated as certain simply because it is generated. Check it against the complete project information and seek an appropriate professional review when the decision or risk warrants it.
